FAQs
When should I arrive for my session?
Please arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to ensure adequate time for completion of intake forms and to consult with your therapist regarding the best massage to meet your needs.
What if I can’t make my scheduled appointment?
To ensure that our clients receive the highest level of service, we only have a limited number of available spots open per day. If you are unable to make your scheduled appointment for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible so that we may open that spot to another client. This will ensure that we are able to continue to meet the demand for our therapist.
Do I have to completely disrobe for the session? What about privacy?
Take off only as much clothing as you are comfortable removing. If you don’t want to remove your clothing, wear clothing that will be comfortable during the massage and allow the massage therapist to touch and move the areas of your body you expect will need to be massaged. The therapist will leave the room while you undress. A sheet is provided for draping during the massage and the therapist will uncover only the part of your body being massaged, ensuring that modesty is respected at all times. After your session has concluded, you will be provided with privacy while dressing.
Why is it important that I drink plenty of water afterward?
There are several primary reasons for people to drink water after a massage. The first has to do with substances released by the muscles as the massage therapist manipulates them, and the second has to do with ensuring that the muscles of the body are properly hydrated. In the case of the first reason, water after a massage helps the body flush out any accumulated materials in the muscles which were released during the massage. Especially in the case of deep tissue massage, massage stimulates circulation in the body while expressing water, salt, and other minerals from the muscles, and circulation is designed to carry away waste materials generated by cells. By providing the body with plenty of water, massage clients can help sweep away these waste materials; otherwise, they might build up, causing muscle aches and soreness after a massage. Most importantly, people should drink water after a massage because massage can be dehydrating. The manipulation of the muscles depletes them of water, and also moves the fluid in the interstitial spaces between the muscles around. By drinking water, people can rehydrate their muscles, reducing the potential for pain and soreness in the days following a massage. For the same reason, people should drink water after exercise and other forms of exertion, because when the muscles are worked, they lose water and electrolytes.
What is the standard practice regarding tipping?
Tipping your therapist is encouraged, and is the best way (along with pre-booking your next appointment) to let your therapist know that you enjoyed your session. You may tip your therapist directly with cash, leave cash for the therapist at the front desk, or add gratuity to your credit card during check out.
Other tips to help you get the most from your session:
- Please turn off your cell phone prior to your session. Even set on vibrate, the noise of cell phones can not only interrupt a session and make relaxation difficult, but can disrupt others receiving services within the building.
- It is important to communicate with your massage therapist. Before your session, give accurate health information and let the therapist know your expectations and reasons for the massage. Also be sure to disclose to your therapist if you have any allergies to lotions, oils, or aromatherapy scents prior to the start of your session.
- Remember that the effects of certain medications and alcohol can be intensified during and after a massage due to increased blood flow to the tissue and organs. Be sure to tell your therapist if you have taken any pain medications or consumed any alcoholic beverages within 4 hours prior to your scheduled appointment.
- In order for you to integrate and absorb the results of the massage session, you will be provided with some time to relax after your session. Take this time for yourself, and do not sit up or get up from the table too quickly, especially if you are dizzy or light headed after the massage.
- In the case of therapies requiring deep pressure, you may experience some residual discomfort for several days following your session. Use ice or cold therapy products (such as BIOFREEZE) for 72 hours following your therapy. You may also use Ibuprofen or Motrin. *Do not use heat or heat therapies for 72 hours following your massage as this can cause increased inflammation to the tissue.
- Use BIOFREEZE in-between your scheduled appointments to relieve any aching muscles, arthritis pain, joint or foot discomfort. BIOFREEZE may be used up to four times daily, and can also be used right before bed to ensure an uninterrupted night’s sleep, free of pain and stiffness. To use: Rub a small amount (about the size of a quarter) on the affected area and massage for 3-4 minutes to fully penetrate. BIOFREEZE does not have a lingering odor and is non-greasy, so it can be used at work and throughout the day. BIOFREEZE may be purchased through your therapist before or after your session.
- Be prepared to schedule several massage sessions. Massage has its greatest benefits over time. The therapeutic effects of massage are cumulative, so the more often you get a massage, the better you will feel and the more quickly your body will respond. From one session to the next, relaxation deepens as the chronic patterns of stress in the body are affected and released. If you are getting a massage to address chronic muscular tension or recovery from a soft tissue injury, more than one session is usually needed.
